This is a really astonishing love-in.

Bolsonaro has done more than perhaps any other world leader (tied with Trump) to anger the Chinese. But Xi is *desperate* to make nice with him.

Those predicting U.S. farm exports will come surging back some time soon should be nervous.
To be clear, I think China is shifting its agricultural import dependence quite aggressively to Brazil and away from the U.S.

There is obviously a short-term thing around soybeans, but this diplomatic love-in suggests a longer-term shift too.
If you've watched Beijing get put other world leaders in the deep freeze over perceived slights (banning Norwegian salmon over Liu Xiaobo's Nobel, etc) it's genuinely surreal and a bit alarming seeing how aggressively they're cosying up to Brazil.
The global angle on this is that Chinese agricultural demand could have a huge impact on deforestation and cropland conversion in Brazil's cerrado and the fire-struck Amazon, and thus on the global climate. I wrote about that here:
