People are still trying to convince me that my opinion on illegal downloads is wrong, and y'all, this is my living, this is my career, this is the thing I love most of all. My girlfriend knows she's "the other woman" to my work.
Nothing you can say is ever going to convince me that because I have worked my ass off to become a full-time creative professional, I should open everything I do to illegal copyright infringement. No, not even that.
Is copyright broken? Yes. Copyright is broken. As a huge advocate for fanfic, I've been aware of that since I was fourteen or so, and started trying to understand why I had to put disclaimers on my ElfQuest stories.
In a perfect world, copyright would be life of author + seven, no exceptions, not even things like Peter Pan (which is a whole can of worms that should never have been opened, look it up if you're curious).
"The law is broken so I'm morally in the right to break it" doesn't work with me, because the power company doesn't accept moral superiority as payment for my electric bill.
So since today is "yell at Seanan about opinions she's never going to change and doesn't think she's wrong about" day, here are a few more of my unchangeable opinions:
1. Generation one of My Little Pony is the best generation. They didn't have expectations to live up to, and so they played most broadly with the flexibility of the form and its possibilities. Also, they fought and defeated THE DEVIL.
2. Remakes shouldn't be the dominant form of entertainment, but they're important, because the visual language of storytelling changes, and remaking a story keeps it viable and accessible to new audiences.
3. The ideal salad consists of a base green, a protein, a savory fruit such as tomato, a sweet fruit such as peach, a sharp cheese, and a cronch. Mushrooms, carrots, and other such "bland bites" can enhance, but aren't essential.
4. We may never know for sure, but the Black Death in Europe was very likely unrelated to the Y. Pestis bacteria, which doesn't fit the epidemiological picture painted by the outbreaks.
5. Mermaids are neat.
6. There is nothing wrong with loving whatever it is you love, as long as it isn't hurting anyone else. Doll collectors, model boat enthusiasts, bakers, none of you should have to hide your passions.
7. I think it says something about our society that most of the hobbies we deride as "childish" are ones traditionally associated with women. A doll collection is "immature." A train collection is "a harmless hobby." We need to stop doing that.
8. If you call someone else's pets disgusting, or say things like "ew" or "kill it with fire" when you see pictures of them, you're an asshole. You might not be an asshole forever, but as long as you have that reaction, you are.
9. Cats do not belong outside. They are highly invasive murder machines that deserve to be pampered and protected.
10. Coyotes do not deserve to be treated like monsters because they eat cats when they find them outdoors. They were on this continent before Europeans introduced cats, which don't belong here.
11. Life is not a production of MEAN GIRLS. We don't have to be cruel to be happy. Kindness is not naive, and trying to walk in the world like love is real is not a sin. Be excellent to each other. This is all we've got.
