Those who are anti high fines should realize that in US even celebrities are jailed for 2 if they are found Driving Under Influence (alcohol or drugs) #ChallanSpeedBreaker
*2years.
This anti fine protest #ChallanSpeedBreaker #challanpecharcha gives a bird's eye view that people are more interested in saving a few 1000s and not their lives. It implies that their life in their own eyes is not more than a few thousand rupees!
Once during my college days, I got in a bus and did not buy the ticket. I was promptly fined 100 by the conductor. Those days my monthly stipend was 500. That was such a painful and costly lesson that I never, ever travelled without ticket ever again!

This is particularly true when u compare the way Economy was handled by Vajpayee govt. The then govt is credited with unleashing the Telecom Revolution, Insurance Sector reforms and huge infrastructure development in less than 5 years. (1)
Such was the scale of reforms unleashed by the Vajpayee govt that the next 5 years were spent basking in the reflected glory of those reforms: The heydays of 10.3% growth rate, which led to a period of fiscal profligacy and runaway inflation under the UPA FMs.(2)
Lets just say that such was the profligacy and corruption unleashed by UPA 1& 2, that the nation is only now, after 5 years coming out of the hangover of that. (The nature of the beast is such that economic reforms bear fruits with a lag.(3)

In his speech @nitin_gadkari sir has mentioned the innovative ways in which his ministry is raising funds for infrastructure development:
During the UPA years the BOT (build, operate, transfer) method was in use where the private took over the project completely for a 15 year...
And at the end of the 15 year period they transferred the road asset back to the govt. This model meant that the risk of land acquisition and fluctuating toll collections were the headache of the private contractor. Predictably this model caused widespread bankruptcy..

What does #Budget2019 say about the GOI's vision of New India:
1) India is now truly treading the welfare route - pensions by the state to ever larger groups of people, farmers, small shopkeepers. Interest subvention to women in SHG.
2) The money required for more & more infra development, the socialist schemes will come from : Direct Taxes, Disinvestment and Borrowing.
Direct Taxes and Disinvestment are common tricks, only new trick is the borrowing in this budget.
3) The Disinvestment Well of PSUs will run dry in the next 2 years. Given GOI's voracious appetite for welfare schemes where will the money for these schemes come from in the future? Will mules called "Tax Payers" die to fund the govt? @narendramodi @nsitharaman

Even if you oppose Trump today as much as you did in 2016, the last 2 years have probably changed you ideologically.

When I campaigned and voted for HRC In 2016, I liked her centrism and proven capacity to work with Republicans, whom I still believed operated in good faith.
But learning how Obama “worked with” McConnell to conceal the national security threat posed by the Russian military invention in Trump’s favor soured me on compromise...at least when it comes to Senate leadership.
Seeing the Thorazine-deprived pinwheel eyes of Devin Nunes, Jim Jordan, Lindsey Graham, Mark Meadows, Trey Gowdy, etc etc has made me wonder what compromise with these nuts would even look like. Like Corker and Flake, I think these people are all lost to reason.

SAMHSA will focus on nation no longer just on grantees.
56.8M Americans have a mental or substance use disorder in the country.
California looks very similar to the nation.

I’m disappointed to see someone as smart as Renato to use the Manafort sentence as an opportunity to raise the old bugaboo of “sentencing disparities” caused by judicial sentencing discretion. It’s misleading, if not disingenuous. 1/
A world without judicial sentencing discretion is not a world where everyone gets fair and equal sentences. It’s a world in which prosecutors wield an enormous amount of power and get to (sometimes unilaterally) dictate sentences. 2/
And, in case you were wondering how prosecutors exercise that power—the answer is that it’s very hard to know. Judicial sentencing discretion is open, transparent, and available for the world to see. But prosecutors’ decisions are largely shielded from view. 3/

Under oath today, it was made public, that there is an open and ongoing FBI criminal investigation, through the Little Rock FO of the FBI into the Clinton Foundation.
This photo was leaked a few months back by a DJ in Little Rock of the @FBILittleRock raiding the Clinton Foundation. Today in the hearing this photo was reference that this was indeed the raid of the CF. I implore everyone to watch the the hearing today
What I heard today was a lot more compelling to me than what I was expecting. A 6000 page probable cause submission given the detail of the forensics these guys undertook makes me a little more optimistic.

As a cancer researcher & science communicator, I have very mixed feelings on proposed #alcohol cancer labelling for drinks. I'll try here to elucidate why, and you can tell me whether you agree or not (1/n)
...so firstly, is alcohol a carcinogen? Almost undoubtedly, yes. IARC grade it a class 1 carcinogen, alongside asbestos, ionizing radiation, & smoking. We even know some mechanisms of damage. So labels should be a no-brainer, right? (2/n)
...well not quite. The real question isn't just whether something causes cancer (oxygen, processed meat, and sunlight are also Class 1 carcinogens for example) but how much it increases our risk of getting cancer. We need both bits of information to make a call (3/n)
