If you pay extremely high school fees (> 1M) at the nursery, primary, or junior secondary level.

It makes sense to gather 8 to 10 of your friends that pay that high and design your own school with a proper curriculum that teaches your children the lessons you wish they learned.
You get to hire really good teachers at good pay.
Teachers are over-invested in helping your children succeed.
You get to skip all the bad lessons taught in schools
Plus there are no national exams to write at that level. So languages and sciences is enough for the basics.
Not a Soundcloud link. Just another idea for parents struggling to pay school fees.

Everyone wants to enjoy outlier success in everything they do, and I think @samaltman wrote a good post about it here.

But I want to share an idea that @markessien told me.

To be successful, you need to have a technique many people cannot replicate.
To create a technique, you need to go in very deep on a knowledge niche that many people find very hard and become an expert at it. E.g: There are a few people in the world (<10M) who are very good at mathematics or using Excel because many people find it hard to do.
We all know someone that seems super productive and has a higher production output than the average. E.g: It is super amazing how @doubleEph can produce high quality reads on politics and economics in very short periods.

For my new year resolution, I tried a different approach from what I have seen people say - setting goals, building micro-habits, learning something new.

This is my formula. It is a variation of @JeffBezos Regret Mnimization formula. I suggest you try it too. [THREAD]
Imagine you are 5 - 10 years older than you are today. But you are stuck in the same situation (in disagreement with your parents, at the job you hate/like, in the bus on your way home, eating unhealthy, not having savings, postponing your projects, et al)

Would you be happy?
If no, try and imagine the way you want to feel 5 - 10 years from now - celebrated, happy, rich, influential, loved, successful, kinder, et al.

Do not imagine the kind of car you will drive or the apartment you will live in, or the vacations you want. Those things are fleeting

I've been trying to get financially smarter and plan for the future. My findings:

The only naira denominated financial assets worth investing in Nigeria are seed capital in privately-held Nigerian businesses.

Short term rentals. E.g: What Fibre.ng does.

Naira loses value every 4 years, but no one ever tells you that. Not even your fave.

This means that long term Naira denominated investments lose value because they're Naira denominated. E.g land, life insurance, pension, et al.

I will explain:
A friend's mum bought 2 plots of land in Palmgrove back in 1997 for 100K.

She sold it in 2017 for 5M. Sounds like a 50X return on her initial investment? Wrong. It's a 2X return.

If she changed her money to USD on '97 and held it under her bed she would have 2.1M today.

Like so many other border actions, this is bad law, bad policy, & poor intel. Overly intrusive, extremely costly, and unlikely to yield meaningful information in the vast majority of cases. Still makes sense to use DNA testing in one-off cases (e.g. crime solving) but not in bulk
Lots of research shows the ways biometrics can reinforce structural inequality. In today's climate, this kind of bulk testing, especially in an immigration context, also leads to real risk of misuse for ethnic profiling. I wrote about that risk here: bit.ly/2TEDLBm
Fun fact: the Human Genome Project - the first-ever attempt to sequence the entire human genome - was a hugely ambitious, multi-billion$ effort in 1990 when it was kicked off. By 2003, it was complete. In 2019, it's so cheap that millions of people take home DNA tests for $100.

@dashching To see whether this argument makes sense we can—and should—look at this causal mechanism at every one of its five steps. Simply focusing on (5) alone leaves vulnerability to the parry of "this is a long-run process". And & being able to say a decade hence that it did not work 2/
@dashching is of little use in the policy debate now. Better, I think, to say everything:

1. U.S not a small open economy
2. No sign of any jump in investment
3. Growth boost small and driven by Keynesian demand rather than by (nonexistent) supply-side investment jump

Lots of startups get stuck
before they get to Product-Market-Fit.

What would be the reasons?

Here are some, I see on a daily basis. They are related to issues with founders or market (in no particular order):
1) Founders haven't studied or trained on basic things of startups: idea validation, market validation, customer value-proposition, team-building, product building, basic finance, and total money required to do few iterations.
A: Work for a startup for a few years and learn.
2) Founders are solving a problem that they face in their daily life at home or work and start solving for themselves before checking whether there are others who care about the same problem. After building the product, they realize the market issue.
A: Idea validation failure
