Texas plans to execute Rodney Reed even though an alternate suspect was never really investigated. Jimmy Fennell failed two polygraph tests on this question: “Did you strangle Stacey Stites?” Detectives cleared him anyway. Why? Maybe because Fennell was a local police officer?
Jimmy Fennell was engaged to Stacey Stites at the time she was killed. Detectives never bothered to search or even look at the apartment Fennell and Stacey shared even though that was the last place she was seen alive.
Police and prosecutors said that Stacey Stites was driving Jimmy Fennell’s truck when she was abducted and killed. So what happened to the truck? Investigators released it to Fennell less than a week after the murder. He immediately sold it.
Jimmy Fennell was accused of misconduct while on the job as a police officer multiple times. One woman said that Fennell followed her around town. A police dispatcher later called her in the middle of the night and asked her to step outside to talk with Fennell’s colleague.
In another incident, Fennell and a second officer pursued a man who had previously accused them of harassing him. The two officers allegedly beat the man and Fennell allegedly held a gun to his head. A civil lawsuit against the police department over this incident was settled.
Jimmy Fennell began dating another woman 3 months after Stacey Stites’s death. After that woman broke off the relationship, she said Fennell stalked her, driving by her house nightly and shining a spotlight in the windows. She filed a police report that mysteriously disappeared.
Jimmy Fennell was accused of raping a woman who was in police custody when he was a sergeant in Georgetown, TX. He put a gun to her head and said he would kill her if he ever went to jail. Fennell was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released last year.
