Is it wrong to believe that every teacher of writing, school administrator, school board member, and education think-tanker should read your books on how we should change our approaches to teaching writing? Is this grandiose?
Probably, but every time someone laments about how students can't write or offer some doomed approach to raising student "achievement" when it comes to writing, I can't help but think, "we know what we need to do," and hope they read the books.
These problems are solvable. There's legions of people who are working on them and finding new approaches that work, but those voices aren't rising to the top of the cultural conversation because they tend to challenge the status quo. How can they break through?
Again, this is a gross, grandiose thought, but if every 8th grader was given a copy of The Writer's Practice and access to a knowledgable, not overburdened teacher and they simply worked through the book through freshman year of college, students would be better off than now.
Absurd to think such a thing, but I wouldn't have written the book if I didn't believe that at some level. That's not to say that's what we should do, just that any shift to the status quo offers a chance for improvement.
Thankfully, there are a lot of folks out there challenging the status quo. I'm blogging about one of them right now for Monday. Unfortunately, there's still too many entrenched forces that keep the status quo in place.
