As more people are juuuuust starting to grapple with the depth and pervasiveness of white supremacy, one of the key ways white supremacists fight against realization is "fake-out" moves that let them dismiss systemic critiques as overreaction.
If you're watching the broad trends and movements, it's about as convincing as a 6-year-old aaaaalmost poking their sibling while screaming "I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you!" for the duration of a 300m road trip
And despite what moderation-loving centrists love to announce, the solution isn’t ignoring these dog whistle fake-outs; time and time again supremacist groups, have demonstrated that they will keep pushing the boundaries to normalize more and more obvious signaling.
The answer isn’t to ignore everything but literal nazi cosplay; it’s to call attention to the deliberate obfuscation of their signals, the careful conflation of innocuous cultural detritus with race-war symbolism.
When people from marginalized communities point out the symbols and signals, when they say "Hey, this makes me feel pretty unsafe," LISTEN TO THEM AND DON'T MAKE IT THEIR PROBLEM.

The problem is white supremacists weaponising innocuous symbols, not threatened people noticing it.
