My top 4 tips for how men can be better allies to their female colleagues - especially at events.
1. If there's an open discussion don't jump in and be the first to speak up. It gets boring and repetitive.
2. If you're at a conference and there's time for questions, don't spout out 5 mins worth of comments. If they wanted your thoughts, you'd be on the panel. Think of a succinct question and wait your turn.
3. If you're chairing an event, don't immediately pick out the first man who put his hand up. Look at the room - just because someone wasn't quick to put their hand up doesn't make their view any less valid.
4. Be aware of when women are trying to make a point - including when they're trying to find a gap to speak. Open up space for them to do so. E.g. 'were you going to say something?' Or, 'I'd be really interested in the thoughts of X.'
