@Amtrak is putting an end to its sit-down dining car on long-distance rides. Why? Amtrak says it is trying to cater to millennials, who are always "on the run." But, who is on the run while aboard a long-distance train?! washingtonpost.com/local/traffica…
This honestly makes no sense to me. Who on earth would really prefer a pre-packaged meal versus something freshly cooked???? washingtonpost.com/local/traffica…
Also, long-distance trains have both the cafe car & the dining car. So if supposedly "on the run" millennials wanted a microwaved meal vs something freshly prepared, they could go to the cafe car instead of sitting down at dining car. This explanation from @Amtrak doesn't add up.
The dining car was one of the great, memorable things about traveling long-distance on @Amtrak. This move to get rid of it makes zero sense. I always thought they should double down on the idea, and maybe add a bar car or something -- not go the other direction.
A good time to re-up this 2017 @nytimes story: "How the Amtrak Dining Car Could Heal the Nation" nytimes.com/2017/11/28/art…
Last thing: If @Amtrak really wants to lure millennials, they could start with installing wifi that actually works on their trains!
