With his retweets of those vile anti-Clinton conspiracy theories, Trump gave permission — or perhaps even, in effect, assigned — his supporters in right-wing media to go full steam ahead with that narrative.
It continues to be a tricky situation for newsrooms. On one hand, you don’t want to give oxygen to these conspiracy theories. On the other hand, the president of the United States is peddling them.
One easy thing reporters can do though is avoid straight up quote retweeting the conspiracy theory POTUS just retweeted, with the only commentary being that he retweeted it. We know. Don’t help him amplify the conspiracy theory without at least putting it in proper context.
It’s mind blowing how many people are just doing Trump’s bidding for him by retweeting this. It’s all over my feed from journalists pointing out that he retweeted it. It’s summer of 2019. How is the industry not better at this?!
