Acting @FBI Director #McCabe opened a criminal investigation of President Trump on May 16, 2017, one day before Deputy AGl @RodRosenstein appointed #SpecialCounsel #RobertMueller, according to a memo by McCabe released by @JudicialWatch.

In the memo, #McCabe wrote that he had “approved the opening of an investigation of President Donald Trump” on the morning of May 16, 2017.

McCabe informed @RodRosenstein of the opening of the investigation at 12:30 p.m. on that same day.
The memo, which was obtained by @JudicialWatch on Sept. 20, is the 1st document to publicly confirm that #McCabe opened a formal investigation of Trump shortly before @RodRosenstein appointed the #SpecialCounsel to run the investigation.
Upon appointing #Mueller, @RodRosenstein specifically removed #McCabe from the #SpecialCounsel investigation, according to a statement @TheJusticeDept issued in February 2019.

According to the memo, #McCabe informed @RodRosenstein that he is a witness in the case because he participated in the firing of @FBI Director @Comey, which #McCabe considered to be potential #ObstructionOfJustice.

This summary level analysis is spot-on. I read the Wapo article very carefully, there are several buried leads worth calling out. Here's the article again, for anyone who has missed this. Thread follows.

1- So right after Trump fired Comey, Andrew McCabe as acting FBI Director IMMEDIATELY opened a criminal investigation into POTUS Trump for obstruction of justice. This is the buried lede. Wow.
2- This despite the fact that acting AD Rosenstein penned a detailed memo justifying firing of Comey. And not to mention that fact (pointed out by numerous Constitutional scholars) that Trump, as POTUS, was within his authority to fire Comey for pretty much anything.

Jeff Sessions had no choice in the matter of firing McCabe, because of the Inspector General's report.

I would caution everybody into reading too much into this. Russia wants @JeffSessions gone.
If Andy McCabe opened a criminal investigation into Jeff Sessions but Mueller told Sessions lawyer that it had been closed, it was closed ***for a reason*** folks. And the reason wasn't "McCabe got it wrong, Sessions was transparent with Congress"
Everybody stop and think for a moment.
Compartmentalization is real. @Comey compartmentalized like a champ. I don't think McCabe was read in on Sessions. Hence McCabe's opening of a probe, and its being closed again by Bobby III Sticks. SAIC Charlie Kable didn't open a probe :)
