5 year old #refugeesGR child dead in Moria after truck hit a cardboard box he was playing in. politikalesvos.gr/tragiko-dystyc…
Moria is not a place for people. It is overcrowded and doesn't have proper infrastructure. How many children will have to die for #Greece and the #EU to realise that neither the #EUTurkeyDeal works nor the hotspot approach?
I've been reporting on #refugeesGR since Jan 2015 - a little less than 5 years and we've reached to a point, 5 years later that we're still talking about the same things. The conditions in Moria, the winterisation of the camps in the mainland. The lack of capacity in the country.
The lack of accommodation. The imprisonment of children 'for their own protection.' The non-existent integration plans. The insufficient and deadly migration management in all levels. The treatment of #refugeesGR as less than people.
It's been 5 bloody years and nothing has changed. We're still counting bodies and we'll keep counting bodies if this deliberate ignorance continues.
The new Greek government had an agenda of 'turning a new page; solving the crisis'. The only thing that they have done so far is to restrict #refugeesGR from accessing healthcare;
Increase military presence and promise to buy more military equipment for border monitoring which will result of course in even more illegal pushbacks
And of course evict squats which, despite their issues that everyone admits, were the only humane accommodation for those who lived there. #RefugeesGR were treated equally, they could integrate in the society, children went to school.
It's been 5 years and we're still speaking of 'accidents'. The death of that child (and of others) is no accident. It's a murder by the state and the EU's migration policies.
Yet as it always happens in this country, it'll be forgotten in a few days and another squat will be evicted in order to appease the voters and Greek media's cannibalistic instincts. Because 'we do have a plan for success'.
