Paes wasn't the only one to visit Vijayanagara in the reign of the great Krishna Deva Raya.There was also a Duarte Barbossa. He has left more intriguing details of the time. Here are some of its snippets.

The common people of the time were so rich that Barbosa saw men walking around on the road with umbrellas made of silk and decorated with gold and pearls. The most magnificent of times,really.
But the one which brings the strongest of sentiments is his description of Sati at the city, very vividly described in great detail.Quite a rare chronicle this.

Domingo Paes visited Vijayanagara (Bisnaga) during the reign of Krishna Deva Raya roughly around 1520-22

His account of Vijayanagara is perhaps the only external account we have of Hampi during the reign of KDR, if I am not wrong

Hampi’s history starts with a popular folklore.
Two local chieftains, Hakka and Bukka, report to their guru an unusual sight they saw during a hunting expedition. A hare chased by their hound turns courageous & start chasing back the hound.
Vidyaranya, the guru, tells them that the place is very special and asks them to establish their local capital at this place. Thus, the seed of an Empire was sown.
Over the next 200 plus years (1336 AD 1565 AD) four dynasties ruled Vijayanagar.
The Vijayanagar Empire was established by Harihar and Bukka in 1336 AD. When they set up this principality, Muhammad bin Tughlaq was the Sultan in Delhi.
The Vijayanagar period is divided into four different dynasties- Sangama, Saluva, Tuluva and Aravidu.

1) Konaseema- Slice of Kerala in Andhra Pradesh, with it's lush green paddy fields, coconut groves, canals, and a relaxed way of life. Not to mention the delicious sweet Poothareku made here, and it's great food.

2) India's own Grand Canyon, with a fort that speaks of the bravery of it's rulers. It's chieftains had a reputation for being formidable warriors during Vijayanagara Era. And since then it has become a byword for bravery and valor in Telugu.

#TodayInHistory The coronation of Sri Krishna Deva Raya one of the greatest emperors in Indian history, takes place in 1509. Though as per HIndu calendar it was on a Krishnashtami, according to most accounts, while some state it was somewhere in April.
Again much like the origin of Harihara and Bukka Raya, there are conflicting versions of Sri Krishna Deva Raya's ascent to throne, some stating it to be in April, but most agree it was on Krishnashtami, so going as per that.
What is undisputable is that Sri Krishna Deva Raya, was the greatest of the Vijayanagar rulers, under whose reign Vijayanagara attained greatest heights. His reign was marked by military conquests, patronage of arts and culture and flourishing of literature.

Today while we celebrate #AkshayaTrithiya, there is another equally significant celebration, the Chandanotsavam of Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at Simhachalam Temple near Vizag, one of the prominent Narasimha Kshetras.
With Vizag being my hometown, Simhachalam has a personal connection with me, and the Chandanotsavam was something we grew up, of course it was also the hottest day of the year in Vizag. This thread is more on the temple and the traditions.
Simhachalam is one of the few temples where Vishnu, is worshipped as Varaha Narasimha, with both the Avatars merging into one single murthi. The head is that of Varaha, while the torso and tail is that of Narasimha, not sure if this representation is there elsewhere.

Drove from #Bangalore to #Hospet, a distance of 350 km, on March 25th to see the #Hampi ruins. Instead of going back via Chitradurga, turned onto NH 150A from NH 48 at Hiriyur. The Hiriyur - Hospet stretch has much less traffic compared to Chitradurga-Hospet. #IndiaRoadTrip
Soon after crossing Hiriyur en route to #Hospet (near #Hampi), the landscape transformed itself dramatically. There were beautiful craggy hills and fields with the characteristic red soil of the region, with moderate to scanty vegetation. #IndiaRoadTrip
The #Hiriyur to #Hospet route goes close to #Bellary (now #Ballary), w/ its many mines of the best quality iron. Saw trucks transporting iron ore plying on this route. Incidentally, Bellary has often been in the news for rampant illegal mining & export of iron ore. #IndiaRoadTrip
