Elizabeth Warren announced her candidacy on February 9, 2019.

Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy 10 days later, on February 19, 2019.

Who chose to become whose opponent?
Two more things about this:

1. Until Bernie announced, I felt - and I recall other people saying - that there was a good chance he might not run again.

2. The idea that Bernie owns the "economic leftist" lane of politics, in perpetuity and in absentia, seems a little silly.
Bernie in November 2018: "I will PROBABLY run IF I'm the best candidate to beat Trump"

"Intensely discontented but not destitute" sounds exactly like my image of the disappointed educated class that forms the backbone of the new American socialist movement.
In a way, the social justice movement and the alt-right were also both revolutionary movements, after a fashion.

Maybe the disappointments of the 2000s and early 2010s left a great many Americans intensely discontented but not destitute.
Hoffer says that people who join mass movements often feel like failures, and see the movement as their chance to redeem their lives.

1/I haven't written a thread about immigration in a while, so here's a random thread about how my immigration attitudes were shaped by a misheard lyric from my childhood. 😊
2/When I was a little kid, my dad would play me folk music. One of my favorites was a singer named Taj Mahal. I remember listening to a song called "Annie's Lover", about a contemplative farmer who walks around admiring nature.

3/In the song, the farmer is identified as "an African man". This probably just meant he was Black, but as a kid, I interpreted it literally. I assumed he was an African immigrant who came to the U.S. to farm.

I've written about #Sanders over the years and like most leftists, thought his politics were an essential prod to others in Congress. But there are details of his political history here that #Bernie should be pushing instead of hiding: like that he was a Harvard fellow.

#Sanders is often presented as s spendthrift, but what propelled #Bernie from 3-term mayor of tiny Burlington into the House was his fiscal responsibility. He literally was deemed the Republican Trotskyite while mayor for reeling in spending and building the city's coffers.

The insistence by white male writers that there is a two-white-man race out there between Bernie & Beto is so deeply, stunningly misogynist, it takes my breath away.

How is it POSSIBLE that these folks missed the blue wave which was fundamentally female--driven by women voters?
Not just driven by women voters, but driven by women candidates. Left-leaning women candidates, including WOC who ousted long-time older white male incumbents like....Bernie Sanders.

How is anyone missing this fact?
It's a major reason why Sanders' numbers have plummeted.
