NEWS: Trump announces he's nominating Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. 53-year-old DC Circuit judge, former Bush White House staff secretary, worked on Ken Starr's team in the Bill Clinton investigation.
Trump says Kavanaugh is committed to "equal justice under the law."
100% of Trump's Supreme Court nominees have clerked for Anthony Kennedy.
Trump says Kavanaugh "deserves a swift confirmation and robust bipartisan support" in the Senate.
Kavanaugh, long seen on the right as a future justice, was excluded from Trump's first Supreme Court list in 2016. He was added when Trump later updated the list.
.@SenSchumer: "In selecting Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, President Trump has put reproductive rights and freedoms and health care protections for millions of Americans on the judicial chopping block."
Kavanaugh joins a long tradition of Supreme Court nominees plucked from the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, arguably the most influential of the circuits, which often has the final word on executive power.
Kamala Harris waited mere moments before coming out against Kavanaugh. Elizabeth Warren also says she's a NO and is fundraising off the nomination.
Cory Booker is also a NO on Kavanaugh, calling the nomination "enormously concerning and I’m strongly opposed to it."
SUSAN COLLINS: "Judge Kavanaugh has impressive credentials and extensive experience, having served more than a decade on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. I will conduct a careful, thorough vetting of the President’s nominee to the Supreme Court..."
Among the Democratic caucus members who've already come out against Brett Kavanaugh for SCOTUS are Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders.
Joe Manchin sounds open to Brett Kavanaugh on SCOTUS.
