I'm finally allowed to reveal the name of another hero: the original donor who stepped up to help save Nusayba. The operation was cancelled at the last second due to a potential complication. People, please meet Megan Black, the National Clergy Organizer for Faith in Action. 1/
Megan never met my family. We went on a trip last year to Poland with faith and grassroots activist leaders to discuss how to combat growing white nationalism, anti semitism and Islamophobia. She followed the story, applied without telling me. Her entire family was behind it. 2/
Megan lives out of state. She was willing to move here for 5 weeks, give up paid work and donate her liver. Her entire family was prepared to take turns to stay with her. We were elated. Megan is a kind hearted, generous person devoted to equality and social justice. 3/
It was a gut punch for all when we found out, last second, the surgery was cancelled. Megan was the most upset. She apologized to us, crying, because she felt she somehow failed Nusayba. Quite the opposite. Without her part in this story, Nusayba would not have a liver today. 4/
All hail Megan Black, a hero willing to give up a piece of her liver to save our Nusayba, a girl she never met. I hope I can repay her kindness forward one day. 5/5
