I was asked to testify on many topics, including #trauma , #recovery & the lived experience workforce.

I also testified to my own, appalling, lived experience of the #MentalHealth system.

Yesterday I sat in on an excellent (booked out) #economics webinar with expert input from Dr Carolina Alves, Prof Stephen Kinsella and Dr. Catriona Cahill examining the impact of #COVID19 on UK and IRE.

#BusinessIntelligence
#recovery
#economicresponse

Here are my notes!
Short sharp shocks: It's important to separate the 'scenarios' from the 'forecasts'. The first is narrative-based! We are assuming a short, sharp shock. Short - (a quarter); sharp (as seen in unemployment figures); and a shock - this wasn't predicted.
One key differentiator in this crisis is that there is no one entity to blame. Not bad banks, or bondholders. We really are all in this together.

1/7 Young adults are getting rocked by this recession. If we learned anything from the #GFC, we know the recovery will be slow & costly for them. But doesn’t have to be. We can act now to prevent another “lost” generation. My take: newamerica.org/education-poli… @NewAmericaEd
2/7 Recessions hit young people hard. Recoveries reach them late. Already, youth #unemployment has topped 14%. Many students are rethinking college plans, questioning the wisdom of taking on debt in this economy. Tens of thousands of US teens are MIA from virtual HS classes.
3/7 If young people disconnect at high rates from school and the #workforce, the costs will be enormous—both to them and to our economy. The #CARES Act may provide relief to a subset, but many of our most vulnerable young adults will not benefit.

There are two controversial issues around the #eurobond debate that are technical but potentially important. A) is the #ESM joint European debt, ie. fully mutual? B) is it a problem for Italy that the #ESM would be senior? /thread
Is the #ESM joint debt? The ESM is backed by capital, small part paid-in, larger part ‘callable’. The total capital is €705 billion, but lending is limited to €500 billion. /2
So there is a €205 billion safety margin, which is needed for the #ESM to reach a very high rating (= low funding costs on markets). But that does not make it a mutual European bond. /3

Some #medtwitter #CritCareControversies musings on #COVID19 after my first week. (Thread)
1. It’s a new disease. Normal ICU routines don’t seem to work. When you think they are ready to wean from the vent, they are not. Desaturation is common and deep.
2. They seem to like high PEEP as reported before. You can’t wean this fast as with a “normal” pneumonia. All this means light sedation doesn’t work and causes asynchrony. AKI is common and if caught early responds well to diuretics combo. Bloods are weirdly normal.
Still don’t understand what’s the best way to catch superinfection. CRP is up after day 2. We use PCT and it’s fine when sky high, but what about 2.0-3.0?? More data needed. Patients tolerate drying out without haemodynamic instability. Shock is not a prominent feature.

I am praying for you @justinbieber. I hope this treatment is helping you. 🙏

I've considered hyperbaric chamber therapy for chronic pain related to EDS. It is, apparently, a very effective treatment for a lot of things. Our brains and muscles NEED oxygen. Deep breathing works for this reason. Without enough oxygen, our brains panic and our muscles spasm.
I think it's awesome that @justinbieber is opting for oxygen & vitamins instead of other drugs to reverse damage done to his body through self destructive behaviors. Our bodies are built to heal themselves, if only we create the right conditions. #SelfHealing #SelfCare #SelfLove

🔴⏬ Here I start a thread about some Oracle Database concepts. We will see how far it goes - all questions/comments welcome.
🔴⏬ A database (or DBMS - database management system) stores (for short and long term) and manipulates (from many concurrent users/devices) your #data.
🔴⏬ #data is logically structured (tablespaces, schemas, tables, columns, datatypes, constraints,…). The structure is described by #metadata.

Hey New Hampshire! Hear me out?

PETE BUTTIGIEG (a thread):

I'm a person in long term recovery (no alcohol/drugs 25 years!), and work in SUD treatment. My recovery, and work in the field, continues to reveal something important:
We all need each other. A LOT.
/1
The beautiful life I now enjoy, was literally planted in the fertile soil of simple kindness from others...and grew into a sustainable lifestyle around my recovery community's principles of unity & service to others.
/2
At my job in recovery, we work w/the whole family *whenever* we can, because recovery works SO much better as a "we" thing!

When therapists teach hurting families how to "fight fair"...it isn't actually about FIGHTING.

I am a #SocialScientist but I can 100% relate. The #OCD episode that led 2 my diagnosis was centred on ethics protocols 4 working w human subjects. Strict adherence is a necessary part of research but my OCD took "making sure everything is done right" next level in a bad way. 1/4
I became consumed with details and risk scenarios to an extent that was counter productive. Completing an ethics application was so triggering it was near impossible. That's when I took medical leave from my #PhD program. #OCD #MentalHealth #PhDLife #SickNotWeak #PhDChat 2/4
#OCD is esp good at playing on strengths & turning them against us. It capitalizes on assets like responsibility, meticulousness, diligence- traits rewarded in #academia. I believe this is why I didn't recognise my struggle 4 so long. OCD masqueraded as being a good academic. 3/4

What is the victims responsibility?

To recover choice.
To find voice.
To restore the ruins.
To do the hard work of healing.

Don’t you DARE tell a victim it is his/her “responsibility” to tell the story.

It shows you are uniformed at best and utterly obtuse at worst. 🤨
Do you know how long it can take to do the hard hard work of healing what someone else smashed????

Years, I tell you.
Years.

Cowards look at the courageous and ask for more.

Why?

They are COWARDS. 👊🏻

1. Scaffolding is a framework erected for workers to safely work while something is under construction. It is a place where the worker can be anchored, hold supplies, and rest, without constantly tearing down the support system. It helps you hold your place and reduces fatigue.
2. Scaffolding can be internal to a structure, or external to it, depending on the area being worked upon. Where you are doing internal work, you will need to set up and keep strong scaffolding to stay safe, upon which to rest, and to hold the ground you have gained. #recovery
3. If you are doing internal work, but have external scaffolding, your emotional health will continually collapse every time you are triggered, overtired, out of sorts, or overwhelmed. You must place the scaffold where it is needed, otherwise, you will fall like a house of cards.

Every day next few days I'll share one #depression/#anxiety insight from my own experience. If it helps anyone a wee bit, it'll be worth it.
1. "#Happiness" can scare #anxiety patients. In our heads, things are always going wrong. Fear of a "happy" moment undone is doubly painful.
Sorry, this won't be a daily affair as I had earlier imagined. But here's insight #2 based on my brush with #depression/#anxiety.
