There are no words for the Spanish national anthem because no one can agree on what they should be ~Jason Webster #wigtown Jason Webster with the music for the anthem
Everywhere you go in Spain you images of Saint James, Santiago, slaying Muslims... But when he is slaying Moors, he is effectively slaying the Other, those who don’t fit into the notion of Spanish orthodoxy. ~Jason Webster
When you approach Spain you effectively come across a mountain barrier. It’s the second most mountainous country in Europe— it’s effectively a castle that divides the Iberian peninsula very effectively eg. the Basques are behind their own mountain range, their own castle ~Webster
The ‘Moors’ in Spain are often portrayed as not Spanish. They received a lukewarm reception when they were forced to move to North Africa. Many returned to Spain later, completely unnoticed, after having converted to Christianity ~Webster

Spain is effectively a crucible. It’s a place that not only produces base lead, but also pure gold. Spanish history is illuminating for the whole of human civilisation. It is a natural crossroads. All sorts of civilisations and cultures have had to cross Spain ~Jason Webster

Why should we care about Spain? It’s because Spain is a Cassandra figure. Gifted with prophesy but no one listens to her. Spain has always presaged what is going to happen within the rest of the western world. It gives a signal of how things will go elsewhere. ~Jason Webster
The divisions within Spain about Catalonia run very deep. It seems like the Catalonians are playing a long game, whereas Madrid are thinking very much about the short term. Outside of Catalonia even very moderate people get very heated and passionate about Catalonia. ~Webster
