Michaelmas prayer (St Michael & All Angels) today:

God of the open gateway
& the wide horizon,
in whose grace
heaven touches earth:
Give us the courage to name
the powers that war
against life & love
& to receive the ones
who carry messages of peace
& loose our shackled dreams.
A prayer based on S. Shakespeare, "Prayers for an Inclusive Church."
(And yes, St Michael's feast is September 29, but on years when that falls on a Sunday, it is celebrated the following day.)
Figuring we need all the prayers for the defeat of evil that we can get . . .

I absolutely love the academic understatement of "naming discrepancy." The headline should probably be: "Duke researcher upends the Gospel of John and demands rewrite."
And honestly -- this changes EVERYTHING about John 11 and 12. And it also might mean that John (the older gospel) and Luke (the final one) are in some conflict. That John had only Mary; Luke added the Martha/Mary duo; then John got changed to reflect Luke....?

If liberalism was the source of mainline Protestant decline, why are the Southern Baptists in decline?

Because it isn't.

Seeing this old narrative rear its head in mainline churches is discouraging because it has been challenged & corrected for almost 20 years now.
If you are still seeing the demographic changes of American religion through the lens of a book written in the 1970s and championed ever since by theological & political conservatives, you haven't done your homework.
In mainline churches, numerical decline is the result of several intertwined factors:

1) misunderstanding mid-20th membership and making that the normative standard;
