The conclusion of this Guardian article isn't quite true, unfortunately.

For example, in Germany, stadia are maxed at half capacity or 25,000 and Oktoberfest was cancelled (again).

In Italy, nightclubs re-opened only yesterday.

,theguardian.com/commentisfree/… Image
Of course, vaccine passports, continued mask mandates, investments in ventilation, and higher vaccination coverage v likely contribute to transmission reduction, but so does cancelling Oktoberfest, having capacity limits on all large events, & restrictions on indoor social mixing
I think we can probably move beyond the point of saying there are easy answers here, we don't have to pretend that e.g., Germany is fully open too and the only reasons they have lower cases than the UK are that they invested in ventilation and kept mask mandates..!

🧵 Global catastrophic and existential risks: the weightiest complex phenomena?

"Our job is to think about how humanity can have a happy ending...about how GOOD it can be."

- @anderssandberg of @FHIOxford speaking at SFI today:

#AIEthics #Biosecurity
"The idea that humanity actually *could* go extinct required a lot of ideas to come together. First you needed to know that species go extinct. This wasn't clear until [the discovery of fossil Mastodons]."
- @anderssandberg of @FHIOxford at SFI today:

"It's not just that the end of the world could be caused by a bad political decision. In principle, the *right* political decision or technology could *avert* these risks. In the 19th C, it was a considered merely a matter of natural causes."
- @anderssandberg (@FHIOxford) at SFI

This week at SFI: "#Complexity and the Structure of #Music: Universal Features and Evolutionary Perspectives Across Cultures", an #interdisciplinary working group assembled to explore new frameworks for understanding music. Stay tuned for highlights!

"Every pitch class set is connected to every other pitch class set."

– @mbnUNT, co-organizer of this week's #musicology working group, presents on how to understand the #topology of #harmonic structures in music with #network diagrams (e.g. Pic 4 with #JSBach's BWV 66):
Once you represent a musical composition as a network, it is possible to examine the evolutionary dynamics of its harmonic content over time, as explained by @mbnUNT in his opening talk for this week's SFI #musicology working group.

An imperfect thread on some intersections of #BehavioralScience + #ComplexSystems

@DavidPerrott_ @g_arteagoitia
Some ppl recognize behavioral science is in its adolescents in a lot ways. While behavioral scientists have identified design that work really well (you know:
opt-out organ donation @ProfEricJohnson & @dggoldst
Save More for Tomorrow @R_Thaler & @shlomobenartzi)
These are wonderful & we should keep doing these!

But these are only a beginning manifestation of behavioral design & never meant to encompass all of behavioral science

The problem some see is that #nudges are designed in STABLE contexts & with specific demographics

"When making decisions, instead of asking ourselves which option will give us the best results, we should be asking which option will give us good-enough results under the widest range of future states of the world."

"And satisficing with an eye toward a radically uncertain future might be called robust satisficing."

Good enough seems to be a better bet - especially as we become familiar with the variability and swift state changes common to #ComplexSystems

When it comes to desserts, I only trust bees: I can never eat too much honey.

My body somehow recognizes it quickly and sends me a signal early on — “Stop, it's enough!”

If I get a cake from the supermarket, my body will only tell me to eat more. ImageImage
#Complexsystems: studying a bee (the unit) does not help you understand the collective (the colony). The interactions between the bees matter more than their individual nature. They cooperate in ways we cannot understand.
We don't know how to make honey. We know how to create the conditions so that the bees may give us honey, but we don't understand the process—we have a very reductionist view on that. ImageImage

"Exponential change is shocking and really not intuitive... Things happen seemingly slowly and then all at once. And I think it partly explains why we can be so slow to act on things like COVID in the short run and definitely climate in the long run.”

Today's Applied Complexity Symposium begins with a panel on Computation and Complex Economies, feat. Rob Axtell, Joshua Epstein, @C4COMPUTATION, Blake LeBaron, John Miller, & @MelMitchell1

4 Principles of Collective #Computation:

1 Ground truth (objective reality)
2 Effective ground truth (what we agree on, whether or not it is accurate)
3 #Information can be collectively encoded in #networks
4 Outputs are a product of collective dynamics

"What is the #economy? I would argue that it doesn't exist in the physical world. It is a product of our #imagination. It is made out of #ideas. It does have an effect on the physical world. But the imagined order that we have is not succeeding."
