This is a fine read with flaws. I love the author’s deep knowledge of midwestern sources —“This is a part of the country where, the novelist Neal Stephenson observes, you can find small colleges “scattered about…at intervals of approximately one tank of gas.” But...
He does not seem to understand at all why @realDonaldTrump swept through the Midwest in 2016, and he misses one key thing: The Midwest is a land of abundance. Primarily water, but because of that, food, snow, weather generally, and opportunities. With abundance came gratitude.
I am sure there are millions of ungrateful Midwesterners. But on the whole, a percentage less than that of other regions. It was also a region largely untouched by slavery but one which rallied to the Union and has always been Free Soil. But a fine read. Thanks for flagging.
