Okay, strap in bitches, cause I'm going to tell you what Todd Phillips is mad at, and it ain't "woke culture."
Todd doubtlessly grew up watching raunch teen sex comedies. He was raised on Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds, and his entire film oeuvre screams that. Road Trip, Hangover, Due Date.... it all fits this mold.
And at some point in the last decade, we stopped laughing at the protagonists of these types of movies and started viewing them as what they really are -- predators. It was a realization that these characters were really only funny for a very select audience.
So we moved on. We found edgy, raunchy comedy that wasn't about perpetuating abusive cycles, but rather about exposing them. Todd Phillip's comedy is something we as a culture no longer have use for. It's cheap. It's lazy. It's bigoted. It's unchallenging. It's boring.
It's no mistake that some of the most edgy, insightful, dangerous and sharp comedy coming out today is from women. How much praise have you heard heaped on Fleabag and Booksmart, and with good reason.
Todd is mad that he came of age in a culture that no longer pats him on the back for simply existing. He's always been lowest common denominator, and like a coastal village in rising waters, he's the first to be washed away.
So the guy who was never really funny, made a movie about a guy who starts murdering people because no one finds him funny and blames "woke culture," when the only one he should be mad at is himself and his inability progress beyond 1982.
The level of arrogance that Phillips has, demanding that culture praise him for his retrograde misogyny while blaming it for evolving past him speaks volumes to his privilege and narcissism.
And much like the Joker, you mostly just pity him.
