If you start to look at this entire situation as Manafort’s revenge everything makes sense.
He was able to obstruct enough to avoid any conspiracy charges. He wasn’t able to hide his dealings with Ukraine and that’s why he’s in prison right now
In his eyes, the people who shed light on his Ukraine laundering and blood money in 2016, including Leshchenko, Chalupa, Yovanovitch and others, ruined his life. He is now directing a scheme to attack... these three people.
He also wants a pardon, hence the comms with Rudy. Manafort is running this show like a mob boss from prison. Deripaska and Yanukovych would be proud.
