I think people are missing the takeaway from this. It’s not that he’s admitting what he did. It’s that he doesn’t understand why what he’s admitting to is wrong

People are weirdly viewing this tweet as defending Trump’s behavior. Anything but. Rather it’s a recognition that he is so profoundly ill that he can’t exist outside his own ego. This is what makes narcissists so profoundly difficult. They construct their own reality
In his mind, it’s ok to seek foreign assistance because it benefits him. Explaining to him that there are rules and norms against such behaviors can’t penetrate his thinking
It’s why his aides explain things to him over and over and he never comprehends them.
I understand that it's difficult to get one's head around Trump's specific pathology and as anyone who has dealt with profoundly narcissistic individuals will tell you it's so remarkably difficult to grasp.
Their brains don't work like most normal people. They don't abide by the same rules or norms or possess a moral compass. They construct alternate realities that are wholly made up or constructed from bits and pieces of their psyche - but seem 100 percent real to them.
Everything in their lives is about validation and affirmation - and bolstering their fragile egos. And they, for the most part, can't be fixed.
I have no doubt in my mind that Trump believes a) there is nothing at all wrong with asking China to investigate Hunter Biden and b) that Adam Schiff committed a grave offense by making up words about him last week in Congress. He truly 100 percent believes both
And if at one point he knows he's lying he's likely by this point convinced himself that it's true. Narcissists will only take in the information that validates and affirms them and cast out anything that cast doubt on their self-image.
It's unbelievably hard for people who are not narcissists to get their heads around how someone can act like this.
When we look back on the Trump years, it'll be amazing how much time we spent trying to understand and explain the actions of a man who is fundamentally mentally ill
