Don't get why people are giving Chuck Todd credit here. Ron Johnson cites a specific politico article from 2017 that lays out how Hillary's campaign did the same thing Trump is doing now, namely getting dirt on political opponents (it's how we learned of Manafort's corruption)
I mean, he's objectively correct that nobody gave a shit about it when Hillary did it. Sorry but that's just true. What Trump did is very bad and when you dismiss the same point about Hillary it does prove bias.
The media uses the same tactics as Trump but they pretend they don't and they're holier than thou. Anything against their narrative is a "conspiracy theory" and they hand wave it away. That doesn't work in the real world which is why trust in media is at an all time low.
Here's the article Ron Johnson is referring to. It's particularly jarring because Hillary did it with *the same country* Trump is doing it with 😂. This doesn't take away from Trump being corrupt at all, it just proves so is she and they didn't give a shit politico.com/story/2017/01/…
The obvious problem with Johnson's commentary is that he *is* citing this article to try and dismiss Trump's corruption. So he's just a partisan hack in the other direction. But fake indignant Chuck Todd is no hero or brave truth teller. That's the point.
There are a lot of really pithy, snarky dems who think "yeah but he's the president" is an adequate rebuttal. Either we agree that getting dirt on political opponents from foreign sources is bad, or we don't. Your little mental gymnastics specific carve out tap dance is hacky.
At the very least it's politically dumb to use this issue for impeachment since it's kind of a moot point. Trump is so guilty on emoluments and illegal wars. There are so many potent arguments & evidence that I think the process could hurt him way more if this is the focus
Even if you've bought the narrative of Trump did everything bad on Ukraine, there's nothing sketchy on Biden & Dems never did anything akin to this (btw lol to that), at the very least you can still acknowledge so many don't agree and there are other stronger issues to impeach on
There's this weird hive mind thing going on where if you don't agree with impeachment on these specific grounds you're somehow weak on Trump. When in reality the argument is like omg you might strengthen him bc you're running your weakest play against him.
I mean Biden quite literally hid from the media this past week because he didn't want to have to answer questions on Hunter & Ukraine! You really think this is some sort of overpowering angle to take down Trump? It's delusonal!
Imagine an impeachment process where democrats main argument is that Trump violated the norms by fishing for dirt and the entire time his counterargument is screaming from the top of his lungs "THERE IS DIRT!" and giving examples of it. You can't see how that backfires? Cmon.
Free advice for Democrats & the media. If you're gonna go all in on something regarding impeachment, try this. Dems may be corrupt but Trump's corruption quite literally is facilitating a genocide.
