Picked this up Saturday, finished it Sunday.
This is a bitter, brutal exploration of female friendships and what they look like when we're alone, BEACHES by way of JENNIFER'S BODY.
Julie is part of a close-knit but geographically scattered group of four female friends, and when she disappears, only her best friend, Elise, refuses to believe that she's dead.
Then, two years later, Julie reappears, with no memory of where she's been...but is it really Julie?
This is not a kind book. It's not a gentle book. But it's an honest one, and I appreciate that about it.
There comes a point, about two-thirds of the way through, where it looks like the author is about to make a hard left turn into cultural appropriation. And I say to you, no, she doesn't do it; the book remains sweet, sincere, and bloody as hell all the way to the end.
Do recommend.
