An example of a journalist’s efforts to simplify leading to serious error. The court refused only because Johnson undertook to comply with the Act (which is the thing that forces him to ask for an extension). Omit that key fact and you end up badly wrong.
When most of the public will read or hear only a sentence or two, getting that sentence right is rather critical.
NB - since “undertaking” can have a precise meaning, “assured the court that he would” would be a better verb there.
