This is incorrect, and would be giving the Queen wrong advice (not of course for the first time) which she could and should ignore.

Essentially, if within 14 days after a vote of no confidence in Johnson it becomes clear that X is better placed than Johnson to command confidence, then the Queen must send for X. And if Johnson refuses to resign the Queen can and should sack him.
On this point, I think I am in essential agreement with @RobertCraig3 (a very knowledgeable and thoughtful constitutional lawyer but one with whom I disagree on various issues - so a useful cross-check). blogs.lse.ac.uk/brexit/2019/08…
And as @sundersays points out, since my piece the Supreme Court has said something rather important.
