@BrooklynDA None of this conduct should be criminalized in the first place. The problem with diversion programs is that warrants are still issued for failure to appear and people end up before judges and judges set bail.
@BrooklynDA This is how Layleen Polanco, a young Black trans woman, ended up on Rikers Island on $500 bail for 2 months - because she missed a compliance date for a diversion program and a warrant was issued. She died there while in solitary confinement 4 months ago. theappeal.org/spotlight-de-b…

@BrooklynDA @DARollins Don't get me wrong. I think the art classes sound amazing. Maybe they could be part of a program for young people charged with more serious offenses.

I just don't think they should be punishment for minor offenses, which @BrooklynDA already said he wasn't going to prosecute.

BREAKING: A jury has found police officer Robert Olsen not guilty of the murder of Anthony Hill, a 25-year-old Black Air Force veteran.

Olsen shot and killed Mr. Hill, who was naked and unarmed, in an Atlanta apartment building parking lot in 2015.

The jury did find him guilty of the lesser charges of aggravated assault, making a false statement, and two counts of violation of oath.
The jury deliberated for five days and had told the judge they had reached a verdict on some charges as early as Tuesday, but remained deadlocked on others.

Observers presumed the charges on which they were deadlocked were the two felony murder counts.

A Texas jury just sentenced a man to 99 years for kicking a police officer.

You can see in the video below, the man is handcuffed & lying in a hospital stretcher when he kicks the police officer, who wasn't injured & didn't require medical attention.

PS. To be clear, I don't think the man sentenced to 99 years in prison should have been charged or prosecuted at all.

This is not an argument that 99 years is ever an appropriate sentence in prison. It's not. Prison is an horrific place to spend any time.

This attitude, when something horrific happens, to think reflexively "someone must pay" - even if that means a 9-year-old child is charged with first degree murder - is why 2.3 million people are incarcerated in this country.
PS. This doesn't mean nothing is done to address all of the problems we deal with right now by arresting and prosecuting people. It doesn't mean there is no accountability where someone has been harmed.
It just means the criminal legal system is not the fix we think it is, certainly not for a situation where 5 people have died in a fire that may have been lit by a 9-year-old boy.

Two years ago today, on October 13th 2017,
I responded to a tweet from my childhood friend which resulted in me speaking out publicly about Roman Polanski sexually assaulting me on the beach in Malibu when I was 10 years old.
There are numerous reasons I didn’t speak out publicly previous to 2017 about Roman Polanski sexually assaulting me as a child. I knew it wasn’t safe to do so, just as I knew it wasn’t safe to speak out about the crimes committed against me as a child by other perpetrators.
I told Los Angeles Police detectives, when they initially interviewed me in October 2017, where the photos Roman Polanski took of me could be found.
A warrant was issued.
The photos are now in the possession of the
US Attorneys / Department of Justice.

Two years ago myself and @DanWaltonAWU witnessed the AFP raid his union's offices. When we turned up to the AWU Melb office, the nations media were already assembled outside. They were there because Michaelia Cash's office (she was the Minister at the time) tipped them off.
The whole setup was clearly designed to make unions look bad in the eyes of the public by ensuring the raids were seen in living rooms across the country that night. Afterall, police only do raids when something really bad has happened, right?
But it turned out these raids were to get minutes of a meeting from over a decade ago about a donation to GetUp! These minutes had already been provided to a Royal Commission and the @AWUnion would have handed over if asked. So how did these raids come about?

Two years ago, the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history killed 58 and injured 400+ in Las Vegas. The President’s only action was to prohibit bump stocks, and that took over a year. But @MomsDemand acted, and Nevada is now a gun sense state with a woman-led legislature.
It took FIVE YEARS to close the background check loophole. The bill passed in 2013, but the governor vetoed it. Then @MomsDemand volunteers helped pass background checks by ballot initiative in 2016, but state leaders refused to enforce it. All thanks to the @NRA’s opposition.
We didn’t give up. In 2018, Nevada @MomsDemand volunteers changed the makeup of the Nevada legislature through GOTV, and @everytown invested in gun sense candidates. We won - from the Governor on down. And the new lawmakers acted right away to pass gun safety laws. 💪💪💪

Tonight I attended, what can only be described as a propaganda meeting on behalf of trans activism, at Garden Court Chambers. I felt that the panel deliberately ran down the clock in order to discourage and actually stop discussion happening, as I will explain.
As we were introduced to the meeting we were told about where the toilets were (single sex on 1st floor, gender neutral on ground floor - which is nice for people with accessibility issues).

Garden Court Chambers had held an event on the GRA two years previous.
The panel were described as 'experts' and the question that Stephen Clarke, barrister from Garden Court, wanted to address was 'where have we come from?'

Clarke felt that transgender people have a manifest right to have their identity recognised in law and in public.
