Later, I helped to translate ‘Chelsea pensioner’ & ‘town crier’ for an Iranian TV crew (1/5)

(I don’t speak Persian but their camerawoman was Polish) and wanted to ring Roy’s ‘Wielki dzwon’ (big bell) which I helped arrange.

John Riley (2017 world champion, from Bolton) was on great form - now well into his eighth decade. I mention him at my school assemblies.

Despite a small good-natured protest (and a biblical downpour), the @Worldconker contest went ahead.
I fancied the chances of Staff Sergeant Charmaine...we got the chance to chat later. She absolutely loved the character of the raven on gold, in #thelostwords

Charmaine had recently wing-walked & zipwired down Snowdon.
“I only made Staff Sergeant as I liked practical jokes too much”

After the army, she drove road gritters, snowploughs & HGV.
Two titanium knees & a pinned hip didn’t stop her skydiving in 2017. “I just had to go tandem”

“I’d parachuted lots in the army...going tandem was like a big cuddle! My only worry was squashing his willy when we landed”

It was her 87th birthday when we met via #thelostwords

Seemed only right to gift a copy to her & the Royal Hospital she loves.
