Here's the share of the class of 2019, California, African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and White students who are proficient on the SBAC or college-ready on the SAT. SBAC proficiency levels are lower across the board than SAT college-readiness levels.
Here's the percentage points gap between White test takers who are proficient on SBAC/college-ready on the SAT and African-American, Asian, and Hispanic test takers, class of 2019, California. SAT gaps are larger, but the SBAC gaps are also large.
And then there's the problem of comparing these pools at all. Since pretty much everyone takes the SBAC, there are likely many more low-income students in that pool. Less than 2/3 of CA students take the SAT. Over 40% of them have a parent with a post-secondary degree.
All in all, I'm not seeing convincing evidence that the SBAC does not track the racial/ethnic/class disparities that the SAT tracks. If those disparities are the product of bias, than the SBAC has the same problem, but maybe to a lesser degree. (Maybe--again, diff pools)
If those disparities are produced by racism & profound income inequality, where the wealthiest quintile spends 8 times what the 2nd wealthiest quintile does on education, then I don't know that the SBAC is going to save the day, **esp. when the rich start hiring SBAC tutors.**
