Today marks the 30th anniversary of what might have been the worst disaster ever to hit or affect a sporting event, the 1989 #WorldSeries Earthquake. Just before the @SFGiants & @Athletics we to take the field, a 6.9 earthquake hit and leveled parts of the San Francisco Bay Area.
@SFGiants @Athletics Yet the fact that the #WorldSeries was going on when the earthquake struck may have been the biggest break of all, because it hit during the evening commute. As a result, the death toll just just around 70, instead of in the hundreds, or possibly even the thousands.
In fact, the safest place to be when that earthquake struck might have been Candlestick Park, particularly the lower level seating and the field, though had the upper deck buckled (as I-80 and I-880 did), who knows how many casualties there might have been at Candlestick.
