So, crudely speaking, this is how the NI customs proposals determine whether a good dispatched from Great Britain to Northern Ireland should be subject to EU tariffs or not.

Note: this does not take into account regulatory barriers, or the paperwork requirements - just looking at conditions under which tariffs are levied. Also, if the EU and UK agree a free trade agreement it adds an extra layer of considerations.
Big fan of commitment to keeping this #dataviz low budget.

Agree some sort of declaration needed on dispatches from GB to NI. In practice hard to say how burdensome will be, b'cos alternative arrangement' type approaches could actually work on sea border

Some thoughts on the new Johnson deal, particularly on customs elements (others are better placed to discuss consent). Many suspected Johnson’s inevitable landing zone was a Northern Irish specific solution – this has turned out to be the case. 1/x
Yet we no longer have a backstop or insurance policy, dependent on the future relationship, instead we have a permanent solution for NI. Also, the notion of ‘alternative arrangements’ as a conceptual solution for the land border is now dead and buried. 2/x
NI will remain in the EU’s regulatory area for industrial products and agrifood. On customs, while NI will be in the UK’s customs territory, it will apply the EU union customs code at its ports of entry and EU tariffs on goods entering from GB or third countries, unless … 3/x

In terms of economic impact of a basic FTA between the EU and UK, important to understand that it doesn't much help with alleviating new Brexit-induced friction throughout the supply chain, but it does reduce the cost of importing into the UK.
So for a car maker, for example, the obvious solution is to repatriate the supply chain to within the EU and then sell the finished car to consumers in the UK under the terms of the free trade agreement.
Approaching it in such a way also ensures that the exported car can meet the rules of origin criteria of an EU-UK FTA and qualify for zero tariffs.

If we really are closing in on the final landing zone, EU won’t want to waste a deal on a Parliament that won’t sign up to it (again).
So EU tentativeness at this stage very understandable.
I still think extension and general election more likely than deal being signed off by parliament at this stage. What happens then depends on outcome of general election ...

But who knows? I’m just speculating.

I've been trying to find an answer to a question about trade in goods between Northern Ireland & the Republic under the new version of the protocol (backstop/frontstop).

The focus has been on trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and how customs is arranged.

If the UK & EU cannot agree on a free trade agreement (aka "no deal") and since there are no customs procedures for the Irish border:

1. What happens to butter made in Northern Ireland and sold in the Republic? It's essentially duty-free even though the EU has a high tariff

2. What happens to butter made in the Republic and sold in Northern Ireland? Similarly it escapes the UK tariff of €60.5 or €73.8 per 100kg.

3. What happens to French butter shipped to Northern Ireland via Dublin? No duty charged either?

@Telegraph Despite endless claims that it would refuse to renegotiate the binding part of Theresa May’s deal, the EU finally engaged. That's a UK win in itself, but the EU deserves credit for being flexible.

Ok, here, late in the day, is what @rtenews understands EU and UK negotiators have agreed as the revised backstop. Bear with me...I’ll break it down into Customs and Consent
1/ Customs: Northern Ireland is legally in the UK’s customs territory, but would it would apply the EU’s rules and procedures on tariffs.
2/ Northern Ireland would also be aligned with the rules of the single market for industrial goods and agri-food products, meaning both regulatory and customs checks and controls on the Irish Sea for goods going from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.

1/ The UK tabled a 4th technical paper yesterday building on its plans for trade in agri-food (SPS) goods as part of an alternative backstop. It focusses on the movement of agricultural products from Great Britain into Northern Ireland, which would be following some EU SPS rules.
2/ It covers the processes and checks companies moving goods across the Irish Sea in that direction, into an all-Ireland agri-food zone, would have to go through. In that sense it builds on work already done in the current backstop, which includes 'de-dramatised' SPS controls.
3/ The reasoning is that if livestock and animal and plant derived products coming from GB are cleared as compliant before they arrive in NI they can circulate freely across the whole island (and potentially wider Single Market) without needing to be checked at the border itself.

Myth 1 - the deal isn't Brexit

This is often repeated; yet it is simply preposterous

Deal would take us out EU - no commissioner, no MEPs, no compulsory financial contributions (once exit bill settled), no voting rights, basically out EU legal order

It literally is Brexit

B)
Myth 2 - this deal would mean BRINO or staying in Single Market

Again this is total rubbish

The deal takes us definitively out the Single Market.

Even in the backstop, we would be free of practically all Single Market rules & could end free movement & diverge on services
