Also, just whilst we’re on the subject, I recorded the most amazing episode with these two wonderful human rights heroes (and @DoughtyStreet colleagues) which I’m saving for Human Rights Day. It’s a total cracker, could have gone on all night
It’s basically The Reunion for the passing of the Human Rights Act. It was so good I’m going to do a follow up. Also, @JonathanCoopr extremely kindly recorded a separate episode, also brilliant, about the history of 🏳️‍🌈 LGBT+ and human rights laws. That’s the next episode

I agree. I have made my views on what I will not be voting Labour clear, but how people vote in our political system of huge conglomerate parties, where we vote for individuals only, where there are few choices, is a matter of balance and is ultimately for people's consciences
I wouldn't extend that choosing to vote for small, explicitly racist parties such as BNP/EDL/whatever Tommy Robinson supports now (UKIP), but I understand why people want to stay and fight in Labour. Not me though.
I do think that people who do 'stay and fight' run the risk of moral peril - as do Republicans in the US who stick with Trump because they feel he is overall useful even though he's a racist, demagogue etc. But it's a matter for them and I do understand why it's not easy

If anyone 'enables' a Johnson government, it is the Labour Party and its shambolic response to valid allegations of racism, as evidenced by the fact that two of its most prominent Jewish MPs have resigned because of how they were treated.
I am sorry for people who feel they have to choose between voting for what could be a progressive government and taking these allegations seriously. I feel conflicted myself, ultimately as with any election it's on each of our individual consciences
I say "I feel conflicted" in the sense that I want a progressive government to replace the current one, but I am not conflicted about who I will vote for as luckily my constituency has an excellent progressive candidate in @lucianaberger

Nervously watching to see what the Conservative party manifesto says about the Human Rights Act. If the past is a guide to the future, they will commit to scrap and replace it. This is the election where it could actually happen.
It's important to understand that the people who have driven Brexit, and who are now driving the Tory Party further to the right, are the same people who have fought tooth and nail to water down protections in the Human Rights Act.
This is part of a wider project to remove international safety nets for rights protections which have developed over the past 75 years. The key targets were the EU and the European Convention on Human Rights. Dominic Cummings has been very open about this

Seventy years ago, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Emerging from a world war that shocked humanity with its cruelty, the sovereign nations of the world united to specify those rights that are inherent to all persons,
and committed to their promotion and protection henceforth.

The Declaration’s fundamental principles remain as relevant today as they were seventy years ago. Still, governments impede the freedoms of religion or belief and expression.

THREAD: I've seen a lot of "How to Help" posts & I am so grateful for the people who want to help. Having been evacuated from my home for 18 days during the #CarrFire and now living in a community recovering from a natural disaster, I have a few additions. 1/
There are agencies in Butte County doing the best they can but simply don't have the resources to serve the populations that have been displaced. For example, schools are closed until Dec 2. The County library system sure could use an infusion of cash. buttecounty.net/Portals/28/Don… 2/
Libraries will be places of refuge from the smoke but they will also be where people can make copies, access the internet, pick up forms, read books to their kids. 3/

It's May, meaning a lot of my artist friends are graduating! Some of my UK friends are considering freelancing, while searching for jobs or even jumping into it full time and getting themselves out there! Some advice. Do not undersell yourself. You have #rights! (thread!)
As of August 2017, the Artist's Union England determines the following hourly rates for an artist to be fair; £21.04 p/hr for a new graduate artist. That's about $28 dollars for my US friends. This goes up to £27.27 p/hr for 3 yrs+ exp, and £31.47 per hour for 5 years or more. /2
If you are doing sessional/daily rates such as presentations, consultations and installations. You should be looking at £166.24 p/day (£ 83.12 p/ 1⁄2 day) for a new grad artist, £218.19 p/day (£109.10 p/ 1⁄2 day) 3 yrs+ exp, £270.14 p/day (£135.07 p/ 1⁄2 day) 5 yrs+ exp. /3

I had a weird incident happen to me this morning, and I almost hesitate to talk about it, but I think it’s important and needs to be known. (thread)
I think it’s important to talk about what happened to me this morning because 1) folks need to know things like this do happen and 2) I want to recognize two wonderful human beings for being, well, wonderful.
Coming back from an early morning doctor’s appt, the Metro got pretty bad delays on the Red Line. I decided to get a Lyft, which is expensive, so I wound up taking the Line option, which is basically carpooling with other passengers and a lot cheaper.
