The Deadspin debacle (“You can’t write about politics”) is a symptom of a larger problem: the ruling class & dominant systems CONSTANTLY saying to us, “You can only think about a few things. You can’t think critically. We won’t let you have access to broad range of subjects.”
There are so many good journalists ready to do the best work of their lives and so many readers who want it—who want to go along for the ride of thinking deeply and being challenged. It’s a myth there’s no audience for this. The owners/advertisers just don’t want it, because... 
Don’t mean to say news media is simply doing the biding of the state (tho that relationship is insidious, ie 👇🏾). But we really have to think critically about how owners & advertisers pretend to give readers what they want; they give them what THEY want.
Amy Goodman breaks down well in this video what Chomsky calls the “five filters.” Below, the focus is on militiarism. But the theory, which I’ll apply in the next tweet, applies to Deadspin being intellectually murdered by its owners.
But as @megreenwell lays out so heartbreakingly, the issue is NOT a lack of interest in high quality work. It is deliberate strangulation by those who control the means of media production in the interests of the ruling class. theconcourse.deadspin.com/the-adults-in-…
And this is the manufacturing not just of consent, but the manufacturing of a less critically thinking public at work.
