Having been late to Design Twitter's latest implosion over #design #ethics, I have several questions about how our community defines (un)ethical design. A (potentially unnecessary) thread... (1)

For context, see @round's per-usual excellent RT roundup 👇🏼
@round (2) Are certain organizations or institutions (e.g., Facebook, ICE, the military) inherently unethical and therefore any design work produced for them is unethical?
@round (3) If not all design work for such organizations is unethical, what are the characteristics we can use to define the boundaries of ethical vs. unethical design projects?
@round (4) Can "unethical" organizations become more ethical over time? What are the standards we should use to evaluate progress? When does an "unethical" organization stop being labeled as such?
@round (5) If these orgs aren't inherently unethical, are certain behaviors they engage in inherently unethical (e.g., spread of misinformation, child separation) and therefore any design work used to facilitate that behavior is unethical?
@round (6) How much (indirect) impact on such unethical behavior can design have to be considered unethical?
@round (7) Let's take illegal ICE arrests of undocumented immigrants as an example. Are the designers of these three products engaging in similarly unethical behavior?
•AI facial recognition software
•Database tracking mixed-status homes
•ICE employee shift sign-up platform
@round (8) If designers working on unethical products are focusing on features that help minimize the spread or severity of that product's unethical behavior, are they still engaged in unethical design?
@round (9) How do we measure the impact of unethical design and how do we use that impact to justify our criticism of certain products, organizations, and designers?
@round (10) And this last question is particularly directed to the privileged (you know who you are): What are you doing on the individual, organizational, community, and societal levels to give designers of all backgrounds the *freedom* & *security* to act on their values?
