Annual reminder that dressing up as someone from another culture can totally be done without painting your face or stealing religious iconography. If my pasty ass can be one of my favorite poets, Langston Hughes, in high school without blackface, you can manage your costume.
A further note that halloween is a chance to dress as how you see yourself. If you don't see yourself as an asshole... then dressing up in blackface, or as a culture, or stealing a religion... not a good plan.
Wouldn't it be WAY more fun to let the world see your real self, in all its chitinous, leather winged glory? Why glue shit to your head to be a "gypsy" when you can unfurl to your full many-segmented height and unleash your terrible beauty upon the world?
