YES! This, almost fetishization of arrest as a radical rite of passage is unhealthy. And I say that as someone who indulged it in my late teens and easy 20s. Getting arrested, when you're Jane Fonda is a hell of a lot different than if you're working class, of color, trans, etc
2/ ...when this becomes a proof of "real" commitment in some people's minds, it marginalizes those who, for reasons of race, class, gender identity, sexuality, etc can't afford to just get arrested for the fuck of it. They get viewed as "less down" than rich white people...
3/ and I'm not saying its wrong for people like Fonda to get arrested. It brings attention to an issue & that has value. I'm just saying, we should have a clear understanding that being arrested for protest does not make you more down & committed than those who aren't...
