/ For those who seek deep restrictions/limits on immigration (and especially under the nationalistic banner of "America First"), how do you think we can fill the labor market needs of a country w/ an aging population base and declining or essentially flat birth rates?
/ Some argue native born workers -- and especially black folks -- would fill those jobs, and some might. But many of those jobs are in agricultural areas where few long term unemployed, and very few of the black unemployed live, so that shift could be quite minimal...
/ Additionally, bc of their greed many home builders & other companies that occasionally use undocumented labor -- in large part bc they can pay them less & treat them worse, and the workers have no legal protections -- will simply cut back on work projects to save their money..
/ Meaning, again, the shift of work to native-born workers will be minimized. Ultimately, by limiting migration you limit populations that tend to be younger (therefore more likely in the labor market and for a longer time), and are the key to maintaining a healthy economy...
/ ...including the subsidizing of retirement programs like Social Security. As the native born population ages it will be having fewer kids and working less, meaning other sources of economic growth/productivity/retirement subsidy are restricted...
/ Given the economic absurdity of such a plan, the only possible conclusion one can reach is that immigration restrictions are not about economic well-being. They are about ethno-national and racial bigotry. Stopping the browning of America for reasons of prejudice alone...
/ And they surely are not about the interests of black folks. The same people who fight to close the border and deport folks fight to limit anti-discrimination enforcement, unleash cops on black communities, etc. They are white nationalists, explicitly or implicitly.
