It's quite an accomplishment to grow up as a member of a marginalized group but also grow up proud, with a healthy sense of identity, and a commitment to justice for all.
I used to be puzzled when people said they were proud of their ethnicity or nationality. It seemed odd to be proud of something you didn't choose. In a way that argument still stands. But I don't see it the same any more.
Try being proud when you're reminded daily that an almighty system of civilization views you as subhuman. Try being proud when at every border, every bank, every post office there's someone whose job it is to treat you as a criminal.
I'm proud to be a Palestinian refugee because it was and continues to be quite an accomplishment to live as a second-class (non) citizen and still carry myself with dignity and compassion. Yes I'm proud.
