In the past year, the focus on assortment (d in this framework) has increased meaningfully by big retailers.

Small retailers will continue to compete on this dimension as well. Challenge is how to do that when you are left with commoditized data (i.e. IRI).
One reason I love @ataussig and team's new investment in @faire_wholesale is because of the increasing importance of assortment as a way for offline retailers to be successful.

Their data over time should help retailers find great products- or more specifically better match the right long-tail products with the right long-tail retailers.
