Once you are able to go several generations back then you are ready to contact local historical societies in the areas where your ancestors lived. Provide them with names indicators and date ranges and see what comes up.
Ancestry.com is a good vehicle for family research because it allows you to view others family trees that you share common ancestry with so in that way it allows you to contact with relatives who may have more knowledge of your ancestors than you do
