Starting drama school tips:
- prep food in advance. Big pots if chilli etc. Shove it in the freezer for easy dinners.
- keep what makes you unique. Accent/gender/size whatever. Don't change it because someone said you won't work - it's what makes you special
- get a water bottle and use it. Don't let yourself get dehydrated.
- make notes in a way that suits you, not everyone learns the same way. Record sessions, take photos etc.
- label your clothing. Black jumpers all look alike.
- sleep is a healer of all things, prioritise it.
- so what if everyone does that song/monologue. Do it and do it your way.
- forgive yourself for not being perfect. You are human, you make mistakes.
- you are paying the school. They provide you with a service. If you are not getting value, tell them. Band together and be loud.
- agree as a cast who will contact casting directors for shows, don't all message them.
- your mental health is just as vital as your physical. Chat to @IndustryMindsUK if you need support.
- don't try and be Tom Hardy/ any other celebrity. They do that. You be you.
- to those with boobs - get more than one good sports bra and wash it often.
- Your. Teachers. Can. Be. Wrong. Art is subjective; listen, learn, adapt. But don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Don't put your self esteem into the hands of others.
- Practice good communication, esp among housemates. Passive aggression leads to resentment and doesn't change the loo roll. Talk to them with words, not notes.
- you are in control of your reactions, but not much else. You decide how to behave, don't give that power to others.
- they didn't make a mistake, you are good enough to be there. You are awesome and you can do this. #dramaschool #tips #acting #acting
A small addition - get a vitimin D supplement. As we come into winter, long days and no sun do not a happy actor make. The spray is an excellent choice.
