This is Bolivia a few weeks ago. Bolivia has a population of 11 million people. 1.5 million people, more than 10% of the population, had taken to the streets to demand Evo Morales step down following the exposure of an election he tried to rig.
Morales, who had been in power for 14 years, was on his fourth term limit. Bolivia permits presidents to serve two. Morales held a referendum to ask the electorate if they permitted him to run for a fourth term. They said no, so he pushed a court to remove term limits altogether.
Then, as if that wasn’t enough, he got caught trying to rig the election that followed by the OAS, who called for the election to be annulled. Morales wanted to give the election another crack, Bolivians said no and took to the streets.
After huge anti-gov protests, and violence from both pro and anti-government supporters, Morales stepped down after the military asked him to. Trade Unionists were also among those that called for his immediate resignation.
If you’re going to start calling that a coup, and it might well turn into one if free elections don’t follow soon, you’re going to have to discuss Morales suppressing democracy to stay in power. Wilfully omitting that part is an act of revisionism and a denial of Bolivian agency.
