People underestimate leadership. They think it's common and that it's easy to just "groom successors". So, they underrate what organisations like GE did for years and what a sovereign like Lee Kuan Yew did.
Grooming leaders is a system. Many current leaders are unaware that they lack succession skills and that they need a system. They are also terrified of delegating or outsourcing the development of such a system.
You need to groom a successor within a 5 to 10 year window. If you don't, you risk introducing complexities like widening knowledge gap, generational & culture issues, digital divide etc.
If you're a business or government leader, do you have a defined system in place for succession?
