Participants receive classic literature & business books, take part in investment planning classes, support charities and are given the opportunity to visit another country. They also form networks with their peers.

What to do if your mentee isn't meeting your expectations. A #MentoringMonday thread
@AcademicChatter #sciencetwitter #phdchat #ecrchat
1) Ensure your expectations are realistic. Talk to colleagues, take a workshop, do something to check your current expectations against outside sources (not just one). If it turns out you had unrealistic expectations this is an easy change: just adjust them!
2) If the expectation is fair, prepare for the possibility that you were not clear about it. Don't assume "any good scientist would know to do Y". You would be shocked if you really knew how differently people approach problems, prioritize work, interpret conversations.

I appreciate folks recommending their fav public intellectuals to me. I looked at so many websites yesterday & it’s really helpful. So as a thank you, here is a thread for transparency on what I’m doing here.
My original tweet said that I was looking for models & mentors. That language is very purposeful. I recognize, particularly at this point in my career, that the people I want to learn from are excessively busy & in demand.
Looking for models means finding people who appear to be doing the kind of work you want to do (or living the kind of life you want to live) & learning as much as you can about how they did it.

Had a last mentoring session with a graduating chief resident. She was asking what she can do to best succeed in her new academic job and I asked her how I could be a better mentor and clinical educator. Here were the takeaways:

#mentoring #MedEd

I'm a tough educator and I push people, which makes me a favorite of the upper levels, but makes me intimidating sometimes for med students and interns. She advised that I explain that at the beginning of the shift and give them an out if they feel like they're struggling

She said that I'm a good mentor for how to live life as a doctor, how to manage the department, and the non-clinical management of pts. She suggested I ask learners what they hope to learn or struggle with clinically but also what they want to learn non-clinically to start

A quick #thread on the importance of #mentorship and critical #feedback in writing. I’m targeting students, trainees, and younger faculty who struggle with the #mentoring process- I’ll share some vulnerability to demonstrate a #growthmindset- I’ll also recommend 2 books.
A couple of weeks ago I was invited by @AnnalsATS to write an editorial for a paper. I loved the topic so I quickly agreed and started ordering my thoughts. It was a quick turnaround- 2 weeks, so I had to get moving.
I worked diligently on the draft and invited @vitaincerta to co-author- she is smart as a whip and a terrific writer and I knew she would really help to shape a well-written piece. She agreed and I sent her my #ShittyFirstDraft.

According to Greek mythology, MENTOR was Odysseus's trusted counselor. He was assigned the responsibility to raise Odysseus's son Telemachus, whileOdysseus was away fighting in Troy.

A MENTOR is a wise & trusted counselor or teacher.

someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person.

#Mentoring is to teach or give advice or guidance to someone, such as a less experienced person or a child.

If you are doing any of what is stated here to anyone, you are a MENTOR.

I wanted to share my experience on an important topic that I have been asked about a few times, organizational mobility for career advancement.

#mentoring #career
What I mean is joining an organization in one role (maybe not your ideal one) with the idea of moving internally to a better role over time.
If you are looking to transition to a new role, this can be a viable approach. I am not saying it will work for everyone, but it was my story and one I have seen over and over.
