In order to become a notary public, the first thing you should do is check your state requirements. For example, CA requires you be at least 18, pass a background check, be a legal resident, complete a training course approved by the Secretary of State and Pass the state exam.
I did all of that in one day!
Once you’ve completed these steps you must purchase the mandatory notary supplies which includes an official Notary Journal, Notary Public Seal, Dual Printer, blue pens, and bond Insurance. In all, it cost me about $400 in start up costs.

In CA, there’s a difference between being a Notary public and Loan signing agent. You must complete additional training to become a Loan Signing Agent and get certified. This is where you make the real money! My training cost an additional $150 but it’s worth it!
1 signature/notarization costs about $15 in CA. If you’re a certified loan signing agent, you have the ability to complete loan signing packages for Real Estate which can earn you $100+ per job. You can also charge a travel fee, documenting printing fee and mailing fee.
When it comes to marketing, get creative! Use social media & online ads. List your business on Google locations, make sure you have a website and inform everyone in you’re network you’re a notary. You can also list your services on Thumbtacks, Yelp, larger Notary sites, etc.
I also like to visit local business that need Notaries often such as law firms and introduce myself and drop off my business card.
Being a notary is a great side hustle. You just have to go hard w/ marketing and building your clientele. Always be professional, pay attention to what you are signing and have bond insurance! The worst thing that can happen is you get sued and don’t have insurance!
