It’s always remarkable to me in a time of deep community crisis all of the loud male voices who are usually bleating about their alleged God-given right to lead are suspiciously quiet—and all the women I know have already moved in to clean up the mess and trauma.
And I’m including here those religious leaders and syncophants who aren’t brave enough to state their misogyny outright and this hide under cover of denigrating “activism” (code for women’s work). Where are the “scholars” who are supposed to save errybody?
Those “activists” whose devotion to faith/spiritual principles the American Muslim clergy class stay deriding as “secular” are, as far as I can see, the ones stepping in to lay hands on people’s hurt/confusion, at great expense to themselves. Meanwhile, celebrity imams ghosting.
And I’m not shy about my shade: if you think this thread is about you or your fave, it probably is.
A quarter of a century of work with Muslim serving orgs under my belt—I have seen just about everything. Religious institutions are run by human beings, and therefore are subject to everything that humans are prone to, for better and worse.
