Understandable frustration. Misplaced target. The system is coercive. Go to trial & lose: Sentenced automatically to years under harsh mandatory minimum laws. It’s not public defenders. It’s barbaric laws that give prosecutors too much power. We’re fighting to abolish them.
Pleading isn’t my decision to make. Some cases are strong. Others weak. Some guilty & innocent. I work to enable clients to make informed decision. Yet when offered less harsh pleas pretrial by prosecutor in face of terrifying mandatory minimums, 95% plead.
99% of cases dont make it to trial.
95% of convictions are guilty pleas.
Judges rarely decide sentence.
Prosecutors have all power.
Use mandatory minimums to coerce.

We should focus on prosecutors & end mandatory minimums.

Fight against coercion.

Bail fact of the day for all those prosecutors, police, tabloid "reporters," & lawmakers fearmongering about new NY bail laws: As little as 2 days in detention is associated w/ an increased likelihood of arrest, the longer people are held, more likely they are to be rearrested."
When jailed 2-3 days: People almost 40% more likely to commit new crimes before trial than equivalent defendants held no more than 24 hours.

When jailed 8-14 days, People 51% more likely to commit another crime w/n 2 years after completion of cases than equivalent defendants.
Jail & prison is "criminogenic." Make ppl more likely to get rearrested. Undermines public safety. Primary characteristics of jail/prison--shame, isolation, economic deprivation, & violence--are same primary drivers of violence itself. Also marginalizes people: Lost jobs/housing.

I wrote recently about this fearmongering reporter, @juliakmarsh, who makes a living misleading the public & calling predominately Black & Latino people “Punks, Criminals, Jailbirds, & Inmates who get sprung.” The hate & disdain seethes from her writing.
Fearmongering from the NY Posts & Julia Marshs of the world isn’t just disdainful. It’s dangerous. Enables harsher laws, blocks smarter reforms, & here, strengthens the cynical effort to kill common sense criminal justice changes, passed democratically in NY, before they start.

Baekhyun is a laid back easy-going person living his life 1 day at a time, where as Chanyeol has every day until the next year already planned.

The guy was 13 minutes late was all that Chanyeol could think of when he continued wiping the already clean screen of his wrist watch.

He had only placed aside an hour for this meeting and 13mins were already wasted this meant that he'd have to push back a few things.

While elites polarize opinion alonge tribal lines they can guarantee support despite misdemeanors that would not pass the scrutiny of a united populace or parliament.
Whatever the final result come 29/03/2019 the division will remain and will be used for political/personal/financial advantage for years to come.
Sadly I don't see how the country will ever be whole again any time in the near future and beyond.
