Devastating to see images of such quick fire spread last night in #Bolton. It brings back memories of #Grenfell & we can't believe that over 2.5 years later this is happening. Our hearts go out to all the students affected. 1/3

We need answers & urgent action from @10DowningStreet & @mhclg. Ppl must feel safe in their homes. 100s of ppl go to bed scared every night in buildings covered in dangerous materials. When will this be treated as a national emergency?! This cannot go on! #demandchange 3/3

2013 - Boris Johnson overrules the ruling body of the London Fire Brigade and uses legal action to inflict £29m in cuts. Closing 10 fire stations, cutting firefighters by 552, losing 14 fire engines and cutting minimum staffing levels from 5 to 4.
By the time he steps down as Mayor of London he inflicts a further £100m in cuts to £130m total and the loss of 7000 firefighters. Fire prevention measures carried out by the service drop by over 25%.
When challenged by a committee on fire safety on how cutting the fire service would not increase deaths, Boris replies "get stuffed".

A thread on #Grenfell 💚 and the awful racism I am constantly seeing about it. I am exhausted by it. Last night as I sat next to this stone in our theatre, I read tweets that again qualified the deaths of people in the tower with their ethnicity.
2. I had been on the phone to Debbie’s mother earlier in the day and as the 2 year anniversary approaches, her grief is a raw as it was then. And one of the things that upset her - really upset her - was having seen comments about muslims and immigrants.
3. She had been devastated by the news story about the barbecue cardboard effigy. She doesn’t understand why so much hatred seems to be in the ether for Grenfell victims. ‘They have hearts and bones and blood and family, just like my Debbie. Why are people so horrible?”

It's a vitally important and valuable intervention, not least given the unwillingness of the official inquiry to consider human rights and the challenges people have had engaging with it. But I want to come back to a theme I wrote about last year....
I asked 'How could the residents of Grenfell have drawn upon – or had the means to draw upon – existing human rights law and standards in their struggle to make their homes safe and habitable?'

Back in Superior Court for day 2 of the Bruce McArthur sentencing hearing. The courtroom is about half full today. Justice John McMahon has just entered the courtroom. More victim impact statements to be heard before the crown and defence make sentencing submissions
The serial killer has just walked in. Hunched over as usual wearing black jeans and the same plaid shirt & black cable knit sweater as yesterday. Crown telling McMahon, a sketch artist is requesting to sit in front of the bar so she can get a better view of Bruce McArthur
Justice McMahon takes no issues with it. The sketch artist who made the request is Pam Davies who sketches for @globalnewsto. All the sketch artists are now sitting in the jury box so today we will have drawings of McArthur’s face & his expressions, rather than his profile
